Platinum Sports organizes ‘Community Champions League’ series

Platinum Sports, a private sports television channel, will organize the 2015 Community Champions League for various localities across the country. The competition, which starts on November 22 at the El-Wak Stadium, will be used to promote unity and peace in the country ahead of the 2016 General Elections. The event will travel around the country and it will see various neighborhoods compete for prizes.

According to CEO of Platinum Sports, Fiifi Banson, the event provides a good platform for the message of peace to be preached to citizens as the nation prepares for the elections. “We need to begin to begin the awareness of peace ahead of the elections and football gives us the best opportunity for that.

We need to recognize that elections, like football matches, are competitive but they are not situations for war. So, we must talk about peace and unity because if anything happens during and after the elections, our communities will be the most affected.” Banson stated that the competition would begin in the Greater Accra Region and move to the other regions. 16 communities will be entered in the tournament for an eventual winner to be declared at the end. Banson also spoke on how the competition would run. ” The competition will take the format of the African Nations Cup. We have 16 teams just like that competition and we will follow the same elimination processes all the way to the final.

The winner will take home a trophy and a prize of GHS 8,000 with the runner-up taking away GHS 5,000. In addition, there will be souvenirs for the various individual awards like Best Player for the matches, Overall Best Player, Best Goalkeeper and others. We will put together a technical team to determine the winners of these awards.” The draw for the Greater Accra tournament will be held on Wednesday and Members of Parliament for the selected communities are expected to be present at the event.
