The New York Times Features, Sarkodie’s #HistoryInTheMaking Concert

Ghana’s very own creation Hip life seems to have recently falling in love with foreign media as they keep doing feature stories and propping into how the whole moment started. After news emerged about CNN’s documentary on Hip-life with focus on the grandpapa Reggie Rockstone, one of America’s media houses The New York Times has also written a piece on the music genre.

In their report, talking to Ghanaian born US rapper Lighter TOD & mostly Ghanaians based abroad, NY Times did a brief background story on how Mr. Appiah, now known as Lighter T.O.D was influenced by Hip life, as he will be one of 11 performers coming from Ghana and Nigeria, setting the stage for the Ghanaian headliner, Sarkodie.

The Times headlined a detailed story with the headline ‘’Hip life, a Sound Imported From Ghana, Arrives on a New York Stage’’. This headline was mainly inspired by Sarkodie’s much-anticipated ‘’History In The making’’ concert, which is expected to make a ‘’ bold New York debut on August 8, Saturday at the Apollo Theater’’.

I am waiting for this to take off,” said Mark D. Naison, a professor of history at Fordham University. “This is saying: This is a legitimate path for our children to embrace. Because it could lead to some popular recognition for our community. And it could lead to opportunities as producers, promoters and maybe even club owners.” He added, “We haven’t reached the point where it has kicked into the club music of Manhattan and Brooklyn yet.” As Felix M. Sarpong, a Ghanaian community leader and cultural adviser for the Bronx Musical Heritage Museum, said, “Hip life is still a baby.”
