D Black was Crocs’ Y-ired radio show on YFM to talk music, ciroc and trending issues relating to his brand.
The Shigbogbo rapper commenting on his dumb comment that set social media on fire told Vanessa Gyan, Nana Sentuo Bonsu and DJ Kess;
“I was saying exactly how I felt. People didn’t understand exactly what I was trying to say but the fact that you see dumb in dumbing down doesn’t mean the people are dumb.
“The dumb in there means you are simplifying everything that you are saying so everyone can understand what you are saying. I have fans in Sunyani who didn’t attend school and I’m not about to drop double entendres to force them to break it down. People don’t understand that when you play a D Black record where I rap in English all through, I’m trying to compete with the other guys who rap in Twi.
“I’m trying to have a top 10 song, who raps in English and have a top 10 song? None. It’s zero. I come from a point where I was doing a group thing with Kweku T and we were rapping straight English. What that got me was a Chanel O nomination, Ghana Music Awards nomination. But I got all this and was home and not getting shows. I’m the only Ghanaian rapper to win a Channel O and that was from rapping in English. But now I have a family and a company to run, I have to break down what I am doing so more people can understand me so I can be on Sarkodie’s leveI.
“One day, I was home watching my video on MTV and I was broke, I didn’t have anything in my pocket.
“That was six years ago. I actually took advice from Reggie Rockstone. He told me, ‘I like what you do, but you need to touch the people, you need to do a song in Twi’. I told him I couldn’t write in Twi, and he suggested I let D Cryme write for me. Back then we had the Move to the Dance Floor song and he was going in on the Twi rap.”
“But I told Reggie I couldn’t make another person write my raps for me. So I decided to do Pidgin. So I did Vera and that song took me to 33 Cities. Vera never won an award but I made so much money from that song. And that song saved my career and put me up to this point. That was three years ago. I’m not trying to come at you with so much English and metaphors. I’m 29 and had to make money. I wasn’t insulting anyone
